Why do many Tyroleans see the failed rebellion of 1809 as a heroic act? And why do they regard a bearded cattle-dealer as a hero? Why do we need heroes at all? Taking Andreas Hofer as its starting point, this book attempts to see the customary images of heroes from another standpoint. New questions arise in place of the old certainties.
